“The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence.
When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.”
~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Do you struggle with making changes that you know would benefit you? Change is difficult. I think most of us would agree with that. Life is hectic; information, overloaded. Real change requires certain kinds of attention, and most often, the right kind of support.
The Hakomi Method is a somatic, experiential process that cultivates and utilizes mindful self-awareness of body, thought, and feeling to gain insight into those habitual internal dynamics that are usually below our conscious awareness, but yet, exert powerful influence over our daily experiences.
The Hakomi Method offers gentle, yet profound opportunities for identifying, studying, and better understanding these responses, motivations, and behaviors; and perceiving them in new, conscious contexts. When we do this without judgment or force, we open new avenues for healing, growth and change to unfold in more natural, integrated ways; and for our lives, bodies, endeavors, and relationships to feel more connected, nourished, and alive.
“Hakomi” is a native Hopi word that translates as “who am I?” or “how do I stand in relation to the many realms?” The Hakomi Method brings together principles and elements of western psychology and somatic education, eastern spiritual traditions- particularly mindfulness, non-judgment, and non-violence; and contemporary science- including general systems theory and neuro/bio-psychology. Its founder, Ron Kurtz, was known for referring to the method as ‘assisted self-study.’
As a long-time student and practitioner of numerous mind-body and mindfulness-based methods, The Hakomi Method has proven to have the most deeply profound impact on my life, both personally and professionally. With its foundational emphasis on safety, loving presence, and the healing relationship, The Hakomi Method is truly client centered, self-directed, yet gently structured and guided.
Hakomi provides a pathway, invites and allows us, to come to know and understand ourselves more fully, deeply, authentically; and to translate that into meaningful change, greater freedom and effectiveness for our lives.
